Make an AI Built App Look Legit Without a Designer

You do not need taste you were born with. You need six decisions, in order.

You can build a full app now and still feel stupid the moment someone asks why it looks cheap. That gap is real, and it is not a talent gap. Looking legit is a short sequence of decisions, and you can run it in an afternoon without hiring anyone.

Here is the order I use.

1. Pick one color and one font

Not a palette. One brand color that is not the default gradient, and one typeface in two weights. Half of looking legit is just looking decided. Two confident choices beat twelve timid ones.

2. Fix the first screen only

Nobody judges your settings page. They judge the first thing they land on. Put all your effort into the hero and the one screen after it. Legit is a first impression, not an even coat across forty screens.

3. Say the exact thing you do

Swap the sweeping headline for the specific job. "Track propane inventory for food trucks" outperforms "Powering the future of operations" every time. Specific reads as real. Vague reads as a demo.

4. Design the empty state

A new user with no data should see a sentence and a button, not a blank grid. This one move removes the single most common "is this broken" reaction, and it costs you ten minutes.

5. Add one real trust signal

A face, a real name, a specific number, a screenshot of the thing working. One honest proof beats a wall of logos you do not have. Strangers buy from things that look like a person stands behind them.

6. Kill the filler words

Streamline, empower, supercharge, elevate. The audience now reads these as slop, not benefits. Replace each with the concrete outcome. Plain language reads as confidence.

The reason this works

None of these require taste. They require you to make the call the model skipped. Looking AI generated is the sum of decisions you let the machine make. Looking legit is the sum of decisions you took back.

The catch is the same one every time: you cannot see which of these your app is failing, because you are too close to it.
