Design Without a Designer: 5 Decisions That Kill Slop
You cannot hire taste and you do not need to. You need to take back five decisions the model made for you.

You can design without a designer. Not because design is easy, but because the ninety percent of it that makes an app look legit is a handful of decisions, not a lifetime of taste. The model made those decisions for you and made them generic. Your whole job is to take five of them back.
Decision 1: The color
The default is a purple to blue gradient. Every AI app wears it. Override it with one flat, decided color. A single confident color is the fastest signal that a human made a choice here.
Decision 2: The type
The default is Inter on everything, or worse, a different font per screen. Override it with one typeface in two weights. Consistency alone reads as competence.
Decision 3: The first screen
The default is to spread effort evenly across forty screens. Override it by putting almost everything into the hero and the screen right after. Strangers judge the entrance, not the basement.
Decision 4: The empty state
The default is a blank grid a new user reads as broken. Override it with one sentence and one button. Ten minutes, and the most common "is this real" doubt disappears.
Decision 5: The words
The default is filler: streamline, empower, supercharge. Override it with the exact outcome for the exact person. Plain and specific reads as real. Sweeping reads as a demo.
Why five is enough
You will notice none of these are about beauty. They are about intent. An app looks AI generated when the decisions were all made by the machine, and it looks legit when a person clearly made the calls. You do not need forty decisions. You need these five, made on purpose, and you are already past most of the market.
The one thing the list cannot do is show you which decisions your app is currently failing, because you approved every default and stopped seeing them. That is the job a score does: it hands you the five decisions with your specific misses circled.
Take the five decisions back. If you want them scored against your real screens first, run the app through auditmy.design. No designer, no taste tax, just the calls the machine skipped.
